Description
The QX-5 MKII is a 3-way loudspeaker with a 12" (300mm) woofer, 6.5" (165mm) midrange driver and a ring dome tweeter.
As with all Mission speaker concepts, the process of listening, listening, and listening again is the key to improvement. With the added benefit of modern speaker design tools such as computer optimization technology, crossover simulation and laser interferometry, Mission engineers also spent a lot of time fine-tuning the crossovers, components, materials and construction.
Like the already class-leading Mission LX MKII series, the QX MKII series takes an already phenomenal loudspeaker solution, but refines it, optimizes it and adds even more brilliance, sophistication and class through a process of evolution, not revolution.
An improved acrylic fiber cone material was chosen for the QX MKII speakers. By its nature, acrylic fiber is strong, but has a delicate appearance, unlike the hard speaker materials seen in typical speakers in this price range. Embedded in the Mission DiaDrive system, acrylic fiber provides a natural midrange and exceptional clarity. The seamless curvilinear design has a conical support with an increased contact area with the voice coil. This highly efficient and uncompromising system means that the QX MKII series will stand the test of time in terms of timing with an outstanding impact on transients.
From an aesthetic point of view, the QX MKII series brings new matte Lux Black and Lux White finishes with a classic walnut pearl finish. The new colored aluminum top panel is more than just a visual “icing on the cake”; the added rigidity and support offered by this rugged yet stylish addition further enhances the performance of the precision-engineered enclosures of this outstanding loudspeaker series.
Overcoming the problems inherent in the physics of conventional domes, the center of the "ring dome" is fixed by means of a clear and visible "phase plug". This design provides extended high-frequency reproduction by preventing the cancellation of high-frequency waves generated near the center of the diaphragm, across the central axis. The resonance experienced by traditional dome cameras means that when they approach high energy, the HF performance inevitably causes distortion. Managing this phenomenon inevitably reduces the HF capabilities of traditional domes, while the "ring dome" has almost no such complication. The result is better controlled and more consistent behavior from 10kHz to 20kHz and well above! Transients are greatly improved, as is musical detail, particularly instrumental overtones and harmonics.
Keeping the core of the QX styling, the QX MKII is configured in the classic Mission IDG (Inverted Driver Geometry) format. Placing the tweeter below the woofer/midrange equalizes the path length so that the sound waves meet at the height of the listener's head. This principle improves "time alignment".
The QX MKII also takes revolutionary toothed speakers to a new level. More than just a technical appearance or a beautiful design, the frame has been improved through detailed airflow analysis and precise measurements. The new QX MKII bezel design helps dissipate reflections and reduce airflow obstructions to improve the smooth operation of drivers and ports.
