Description
It took the development team, headed by Roy Gandhi, 2 years to create the 2016 Rega Planar 3 model. The new turntable replaced the cult turntable of the previous generation RP3, which received many awards from well-known publications reviewing hi-fi equipment.
The turntable has a new RB330 tonearm, developed using CAD and 3D modeling. The tonearm has a cone tube with a fixed shell integrated into it, has a new steel counterweight and is equipped with high-precision bearings with a low friction coefficient. During development, much attention was paid to precise weight distribution to reduce resonances.

The Rega Planar 3 table is made of a denser material than the previous model and finished in glossy black or white acrylic (optional). The stiffening element of the cabinet, made in accordance with the proprietary Double Brace Technology, is represented by two plates connecting the tonearm base to the main bearing unit. The lower plate is 3 mm thick (versus 2 mm in the RP3) and is made of phenolic resin, while the upper plate uses the same resin but with a metallized surface. Such a rigid construction guarantees resistance to resonances at a relatively low weight of the turntable. The electric motor has an updated control board, improved cooling, is powered by a 24 V adapter, and is characterized by low noise. To select the required disk speed (33.3 or 45 rpm), it is enough to throw the belt from one motor pulley to the other. As an option, an external Rega TT-PSU power supply with an electronic speed shifting system is available. The table has three new support legs made of sanitary foam, which effectively cope with vibrations. The model now looks even more laconic, as its power switch has been moved under the case panel.
The main bearing has been redesigned and has an improved seat, which, thanks to its improved design, reduces the load on the bearing itself. To transmit the torque from the engine to the support disk, a belt and a new, more rigid hub (sub-disk) are used. The material for the backing plate is 12 mm thick lighted Optiwhite glass. A matte felt is included.
The Rega Planar 3 turntable impresses with a clear, rhythmic, dynamic, musical and well-balanced sound with natural low end and extended stage.
