DakhaBrakha is a Ukrainian folk quartet that creates a distinctive blend of traditional Ukrainian music with elements of world music, often described as "ethno-chaos" music. The band was formed in 2004 in Kyiv, Ukraine, and consists of three female vocalists—Nina Garenetska, Iryna Kovalenko, and Olena Tsibulska—along with male multi-instrumentalist Marko Halanevych. The group emerged from the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art "DAKH" under the guidance of avant-garde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Their name translates to "give/take" in the old Ukrainian language, reflecting their philosophy of cultural exchange. DakhaBrakha released their debut album "Na mezhi" (On the Edge) in 2006, which established their experimental approach to Ukrainian folk traditions. Their breakthrough came with the 2010 album "Light," which gained international attention and helped them secure performances at major world music festivals. The band's 2012 album "Yama" became particularly significant, showcasing their ability to transform ancient Ukrainian village songs into contemporary soundscapes. Songs like "Sho z-pod duba" and "Vesna" have become fan favorites, demonstrating their powerful vocal harmonies and hypnotic rhythms. Their 2020 album "Alambari" continued to push boundaries, incorporating influences from their extensive global touring experiences. DakhaBrakha's uniqueness lies in their theatrical presentation and sonic experimentation. The members wear distinctive tall, dark fur hats that have become their visual trademark. They masterfully combine traditional Ukrainian instruments like the darbuka, djembe, accordion, and didgeridoo with haunting polyphonic singing rooted in Ukrainian folklore. Their music addresses themes of Ukrainian identity, history, and resilience, which has taken on profound significance following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
