ONUKA is a project of ex-vocalist of Tomato Jaws and KOOQLA Nata Zhizhchenko and famous electronic musician from Ukraine Eugene Filatov (frontman of The Maneken).

The idea to make a full-fledged joint project was discussed long ago, but it materialized only in the summer of 2013, when the artists started recording their debut single Look. Eugene acted as the main composer and sound producer of the project, as well as performed drum, bass and keyboard parts, and Natalya took over the lyrics, main vocals and sopilka part.

The full band ONUKA consists of vocals, keyboards, electronic drums, two trombones, French horn, and bandura.

The debut album contains 10 tracks, including 4 songs from the mini album Look - When I Met You, Misto, Time and Look. The album is filled with traditional Ukrainian sound motifs played on sopilkas, banduras and trembits. All this is combined with electronic arrangements.

Nata Zhizhchenko:
For many years I had a dream to use traditional Ukrainian instruments and folk music melody in my compositions. It always seemed to me that ethnic elements would enrich electronic music, make its sound deeper and, at the same time, closer to more people. I want young people to stop perceiving folk music as the stale tunes of rural grandmothers. I want us all to feel the connection with our ancient musical culture. We want to give it a new impulse, to bring it back to relevance with the help of electronic arrangements. We bring Ukrainian musical tradition in line with the sound of the 21st century.

Yevhen Filatov:
We originally wrote compositions in two languages - Ukrainian and English. On the one hand, of course, we want the youth of our country to love ONUKA. But at the same time, we intend to show the beauty of Ukrainian melos to the whole world. You can't even imagine how modern the bandura and sopilka can sound! And European listeners, most likely, do not know that such instruments exist at all. We will enlighten them:)
