Palindrom, whose real name is Stepan Burban, is a Ukrainian rapper from Lviv specializing in hip-hop. He is also a singer, composer, director, music producer, and member of the Lviv rap group Chapter 94 (Hlava 94), performing under the pseudonym Coughing Ed.
Stepan Burban began rhyming and rapping for years under other stage names and as part of the Chapter 94 duo before launching his solo project as Palindrom, which has become one of Ukraine's most important modern hip-hop acts. His second solo project gained recognition despite limited mainstream media access, with Burban building a fan base online through streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, where he has several thousand monthly listeners, and via Patreon for exclusive content and donations to cover modest equipment and recording costs. He continues working as a video editor while pursuing music. In 2022, amid the war, he balanced music with humanitarian efforts like buying groceries for war evacuees. On September 1, he released his third album, Invented in a Queue (Придумано В Черзі), featuring 13 tracks and described as a year-long session addressing various traumas to help listeners process personal issues. Earlier, he released an album with 13 tracks including "Kherson," "Cafe Nadia," "City," and "Lucifer," featuring collaborations with Montesquieu, Yuriy Bondarchuk, Sasha Proole, and covers of "Cheremkhova Vihola" and "Racket"; the "Kherson" track, a collaboration with Ukrainer, focuses on temporarily occupied Ukrainian cities and was written post-February 24, evoking nostalgic childhood memories. A documentary featuring Palindrom was shown at a U.S. film festival.
Palindrom stands out for synthesizing past music with Ukrainian cultural context, blending figures like pop singer Ivan Popovych and poet Vasyl Stus amid urban Western Ukrainian landscapes, social criticism, nostalgia, and introspective exploration of reality and life. His work combines recitatives with electronic and ethnic folklore motifs, emphasizing honest Ukrainian narratives tailored for local audiences.
