MUR is a Ukrainian artistic collective and music project founded during the full-scale Russo-Ukrainian War by young artists from Kyiv and Donetsk. The group's name stands for "Mystetskyi Ukrainskyi Rukh" (Ukrainian Artistic Movement), and they work across multiple creative disciplines including music, theater, and documentary-style video production. The project was founded by Oleksandr Khomenko, who serves as lyricist and recitative artist; Viktor Tkachenko, who handles lyrics, music, and sound production; and Mykola Shmundyr, who also performs recitative. The creative team expanded to include Maria O'Reilly as film editor, Solomiia Kozolup as art director and researcher, and Oleksandr Zaika as lead performer and recitative artist. MUR's primary genre is historical rap musical, blending hip-hop with documentary theater and contemporary music styles. MUR's creative journey began with the release of their first studio album "MUR Vol. 1," followed by "Zakhaliavna Knyzhechka," and most notably "Ty [Romantyka]" (You [Romance]), which became their breakthrough work. "Ty [Romantyka]" is Ukraine's first historical rap musical, consisting of 18 songs connected by a single narrative spanning from 1918 to 1937, documenting the repression of Ukrainian writers during the Executed Renaissance era. The album took over half a year to create and was recorded in collaboration with renowned artists including poet and writer Serhiy Zhadan, the musical project hatespeech, Ukrainian actor Yevhen Yanovych, the band NAZVA, and actress and producer Olena Kravets. The musical achieved massive success, with the album generating over 17 million online listens. Its theatrical adaptation sold out across Ukraine and became a pioneer in the "theater in cinema" genre in Ukraine. The project has built a substantial following on social media, with documentary-style videos about Ukrainian literary figures such as Pavlo Tychyna, Ivan Bahrianyi, Vasyl Stus, and Vasyl Symonenko becoming among the most popular educational content on Ukrainian literature on Instagram. What distinguishes MUR is their approach to cultural preservation and national identity during wartime. The project centers on the Executed Renaissance, a tragic period in the 1920s-1930s when the Soviet government executed over 200 Ukrainian cultural figures, and presents these historical events through a contemporary lens that connects them to current struggles. Rather than simply mourning historical tragedy, MUR positions the musical as a window into the past and a statement about cultural survival and resistance. The creators deliberately draw parallels between historical figures and contemporary events, such as connecting the Third Haidamaky Regiment of the Ukrainian People's Army from 100 years ago to today's Third Separate Assault Brigade. This approach has gained international recognition, attracting attention from major publications including BBC, Forbes, Vogue, and the New York Times.
