Great Lakes is an American indie rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1996. Blending indie pop, psychedelic rock, folk, and alternative rock influences, the group became associated with the influential Elephant 6 Collective, a creative network that helped shape the American indie scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The band was founded by Ben Crum, Dan Donahue, and James Huggins. Their self-titled debut album, Great Lakes, was released in 2000 and introduced their distinctive psychedelic indie sound. Over the following years, the band expanded its musical palette through albums such as The Distance Between (2002), Diamond Times (2006), Ways of Escape (2010), Wild Vision (2016), Dreaming Too Close to the Edge (2018), and Contenders (2022), gradually incorporating stronger folk and guitar-rock elements into their music.

While Great Lakes never achieved mainstream commercial success, they earned a dedicated following within the indie music community. Songs such as “Sister City” and “A Little Touched,” along with their critically appreciated albums, helped establish their reputation for thoughtful songwriting and atmospheric arrangements.
