BoomBox is a Ukrainian rock and pop band formed in 2004 in Kyiv by singer Andriy Khlyvnyuk and guitarist Andriy Samoilo. Their music primarily features songs in Ukrainian, with some in Russian and English. The band began as a trio with DJ Valik Matiyuk and recorded their debut album Melomaniya in just 19 hours, releasing it in April 2005. Their second album, Family Biznes, followed in 2006 and achieved gold status in Ukraine and Russia. Subsequent albums include III (2008), Vse Vklyucheno (2010), Seredniy Vik (2011), and Terminal B (2013). In 2013, they won the Yuna music award for best Ukrainian band. BoomBox expanded internationally with tours in Western Europe, North America, and a 2015 ten-year anniversary tour in North America, while performing extensively in Ukrainian cities. After Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, they stopped shows in Russia, despite it previously accounting for two-thirds of their earnings. In 2019, they received recognition for contributions to Ukrainian music. During Russia's 2022 invasion, all members joined Ukraine's Territorial Defense Forces, postponing tours; Khlyvnyuk's a cappella recording of the folk song "Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow" in military uniform went viral, leading to a collaboration with Pink Floyd on "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" The band continues touring to raise funds for Ukraine's armed forces. BoomBox stands out for blending hip-hop, rock, funk, jazz, groove, and reggae into energetic live performances that mix dance rhythms with philosophical ballads, maintaining the same lineup without departures, and their unwavering support for Ukraine, including wartime service and protests like EuroMaidan.
