It is unlikely that Yamaha engineers are overly superstitious, but the commercial success of models with indexes 555 and 777 is an absolutely reliable fact. “Fives” inspire respect with their weight (20 kg) and luxurious finishing with multi-layer piano varnish. The shells feel exceptionally damped and appear to be cast from concrete. Apparently, this approach to design is one of the key points of the “Natural Sound” concept, which Japanese developers have been professing for more than half a century when creating their speaker systems. NS-555 are built according to a three-way design, with four proprietary emitters installed in each speaker. The mid- and high-frequency sections have the familiar horn design and consist of a 25-mm tweeter with an aluminum dome and a 13-cm driver with a membrane made of a patented PMD composite. A pair of low-frequency drivers with a diameter of 162 millimeters with a high-power magnetic system are responsible for the bass range.
They work on the rear bass reflex. As befits a model of this class, massive screw terminals allow connection via two-wire circuits. The quality of assembly and fitting of speaker parts is truly impeccable, however, for Yamaha this is the rule, not the exception. The sound character of the NS-555 is also typically Yamaha, in the best traditions of this brand. This means an almost complete absence of noticeable coloration and maximum approximation to studio monitor neutrality. Despite the presence of four emitters, their docking is absolutely invisible, which is amazing.
