Description

There has always been a clear division in the Rega line-up: the Planar 6 is a compromise plinth design, a bridge between affordable models and premium skeleton designs. The RS Edition blurs that line. It’s not just a Planar 6 in a new guise – it’s a model that borrows key engineering solutions straight from the older Planar 8, while remaining in a familiar, home-style format with a classic plinth and dust cover.

The RS Edition is based on the company's Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core, finished with a metallic aluminum HP laminate with a matching edge. This is the same material that forms the foundation of older Rega "skeleton" models - extremely rigid, but half the weight of the traditional Planar 3 plinth. The design is further reinforced by the company's two-beam system, located exactly between the tonearm mount and the main bearing - where rigidity is most critical for the purity of the sound.

The main difference between the RS Edition and the regular Planar 6 is the RB880 tonearm, which usually comes with the Planar 8. It looks almost identical to the standard RB330, but has received a stainless steel (instead of plastic) vertical bearing housing and a corresponding balancer - a solution that significantly increases rigidity and accuracy. This tonearm and plinth combination is available exclusively in the RS version: it is impossible to purchase such a tonearm separately for the regular Planar 6.

At the tip of the tonearm is the flagship Nd9 cartridge, the most advanced MM cartridge in the Rega range. It combines the company's neodymium magnet system with an extremely rigid and lightweight boron cantilever - the same as that used in the reference Aphelion 2. The cartridge has received the thinnest "fine line" stylus profile from unpolished diamond, made by hand: the minimum tip radius is just 3 microns horizontally and 30 microns vertically. This microscopic precision allows the stylus to instantly respond to the smallest irregularities of the groove, extracting details that are inaccessible to cartridges of simpler design. The new generator geometry with perfect symmetry ensures impeccable channel balance.

The low-noise 24-volt synchronous motor is individually tuned to the Neo MK2's own power supply, which is included in the kit. A new CNC-milled double pulley and two proprietary EBLT belts instead of one provide even more precise and stable acceleration of the platform - a detail that is invisible at first glance, but essential for the microdynamics of recording. The optional Neo MK2 unit adds electronic 33/45 speed switching and fine-tuning of rotation.

The Planar 6 RS Edition Nd9 is the answer to the question "what is the best turntable you can get for reasonable money without moving into the segment of skeleton models". It is the choice of the music lover who has already outgrown the original Planar, but is not yet ready (or does not see the need) to invest in the Planar 8 or 10 - and gets the lion's share of their advantages in a familiar, compact format.
