The sound of vinyl can be greatly improved by reducing unwanted vibrations between the record and the platter.
To achieve this, the surfaces of the record and platter must be in contact as closely as possible. There are two disadvantages to standard clamps that use the principle of weight pressure:
Excessive weight can increase noise levels when used with inexpensive vinyl turntables that do not have strong enough main bearings;
Instead of a tighter fit, too much weight can cause the opposite effect: the vinyl will buckle in the center and lose contact at the edges of the record.
