That's the question that gave birth to the Lockwood Universal Stanley 1. Named after Stanley Timms, the company's founder, carpenter and inventor who started making radio cabinets in the 1930s and eventually created the monitor standard for the BBC, this speaker is the most compact embodiment of the Lockwood philosophy. Not simplistic. The very embodiment.
At the heart of the Stanley 1 is a 5-inch Lockwood Green HPD/SL coaxial driver with an alnico magnet. The same "point source" principle that makes the big flagships of the line so convincing is implemented here in a compact format: a tweeter dome in the center of the woofer, a single radiation point, linear phase throughout the range. The voice sounds where it should. Instruments take up real room space. The music flows naturally—no artifacts, no coloration.
The closed, portless enclosure made of 18mm birch plywood is a deliberate choice for control and precision. The 45Hz to 20kHz range covers virtually all of the musical material, and the bass is tight and articulate—no artificial lift, no “bloat.” The Lockwood A-series crossover is hand-assembled from select components.
The Stanley 1 is available in any Pantone color—from the cabinet to the details. This isn’t a cosmetic option: it’s a conceptual statement that great acoustics don’t have to look the same for everyone. The slim silhouette—just 260mm wide and 165mm deep—allows the Stanley 1 to fit where no other floorstanding speaker with this pedigree simply can’t.
Each cabinet is hand-assembled in the UK, just as Lockwood speakers have been assembled for nearly ninety years.
