The main technological secret of Academy 1 is a 12-inch coaxial speaker of Lockwood's own production: the so-called "point source" system, where the high-frequency emitter is located right in the center of the woofer. The sound is born at one point and spreads evenly in all directions - without time delays between the bands, without phase differences. It is this principle that provides that rare naturalness of reproduction, when the performer's voice seems bodily, and the stage - voluminous and tangible.
Academy 1 is made in the form of a floor-standing speaker: wide baffle, minimal depth, laconic silhouette. The cabinet is assembled from 18-millimeter birch plywood and covered with a unique walnut veneer - each pair has its own unique wood pattern.
A closed cabinet without a bass reflex is a rare solution for speakers with coaxial speakers of this caliber. It delivers controlled, tight bass without “buzz”, precise articulation in the lower register and flawless impulse response. The Lockwood A series crossover is hand-assembled from selected components and an internal OFC cable - the signal reaches the speaker without unnecessary loss and distortion.
A sensitivity of 93.6 dB means that the Academy 1 opens up even with low-power amplifiers - including tube ones.
