The R3 Meta is the only shelf model in KEF’s updated R-series, and that speaks volumes about its ambition. Structurally, it is a full-fledged three-way system: a separate 165mm woofer with a hybrid aluminum cone takes care of the low frequencies, while the 12th generation Uni-Q coaxial driver reproduces the midrange and upper range as a single, inseparable whole. It is this division of labor that allows each band to sound in its comfort zone - without mixing, without compromise.
An important nuance: the R3 Meta shares the same drivers with the flagship floor-standing R11 Meta. That is, the technology is identical, the scale is different.
At the heart of the Uni-Q is MAT (Metamaterial Absorption Technology) technology - a labyrinth of 30 microchannels, each of which is tuned to absorb a specific unwanted frequency. Together, they eliminate up to 99% of the parasitic resonances that usually pollute the sound behind the tweeter. The result is immediately audible: the upper range becomes airy and fast, without any harshness or fatigue even with prolonged listening.
Thanks to the coaxial geometry of Uni-Q, the sound disperses evenly in all directions. There is no need to look for the perfect chair and freeze. The R3 Meta sound equally well in the center of the room and to the side - preserving the depth of the stage, the precise location of the instruments and the feeling of a live performance.
The bass is dense, controlled, with character. Not loud for the sake of loudness, but textured: you can hear every hit on the drum, every movement of the bow on the double bass. In a small room, a subwoofer is not necessary - the R3 Meta will cope on its own.
