Description

There are speakers that live for a generation. And there are those that pass on the tradition, each time reinterpreting it at a new level of technology. The KEF Q Concerto Meta belongs to the second category. The name "Concerto" first appeared in 1969 - it was then that KEF introduced its first three-way trumpet speakers. More than five decades later, this concept returns in the ninth generation of the Q-series with all the arsenal of modern British engineering.

The main thing that sets the Q Concerto Meta apart from other full-range models in its price category is its full three-way design. The 165mm hybrid cone woofer (aluminum skin over paper backing) handles all the sub-bass and bass down to the 430Hz crossover point. Next is the 12th-generation Uni-Q array: a 100mm midrange driver with an aluminum cone and a 19mm dome tweeter with a vented aluminum dome occupy a common concentric position, acting as a single point source of sound. The crossover point between midrange and highs is 2.9kHz. This approach allows each driver to operate in a narrow, optimal range for it, radically reducing intermodulation distortion in the most sensitive midrange for the ear.

Behind the dome tweeter in the Uni-Q array is the Metamaterial Absorption Technology structure - a complex labyrinth of microchannels, each of which is tuned to absorb a specific frequency. In total, the system absorbs 99% of unwanted sound emitted from the rear of the driver. This means that nothing extra gets into the output signal: no reflections from the rear wall of the cabinet, no phase distortions. MAT first appears in the Q-series in the Q Concerto Meta.

Around the Uni-Q array is installed Shadow Flare - a decorative element that also performs an acoustic function: it eliminates the direct line of sight between the tweeter and the edges of the cabinet, where diffraction is most pronounced. In fact, Shadow Flare is an extension of the Uni-Q waveguide, expanding the area of a uniform sound field and reducing the impact of reflections from the cabinet on the fine spatial details of the recording.

The MDF case is internally divided by a partition that isolates the Uni-Q array chamber from the bass chamber with a transverse stiffener. Magnetic removable grills are included. Nominal impedance — 4 Ohm, sensitivity — 85 dB/W/m: the acoustics require an amplifier with a power reserve, but in operation it turns out to be noticeably less demanding than the numbers suggest.
