KC62 subwoofer with proprietary Uni-Core technology. KEF's innovative, patented Uni-Core™ technology redefines the physical space that high-performance speakers and subwoofers require to deliver deep and accurate bass.
Through exceptional engineering and creativity, KEF has revolutionized the way subwoofers are traditionally designed, creating Uni-Core™ technology that delivers deeper bass in ultra-compact enclosures.
The company itself calls the KC62 “The Biggest Small Subwoofer”, humorously playing on the word “biggest” and using it not in the literal sense (“bigger than others”), but in the sense of “the most important, significant, grandiose”.
The KC62 is an ultra-compact subwoofer capable of delivering deep and accurate bass. Yet its power is so great and the unit so small - the size of a soccer ball - that outside of our high-tech world, only magic could explain the KC62's astounding abilities.
Working on the new product, the company's engineers used three of the latest proprietary technologies: Uni-Core, P-Flex Surround and Smart Distortion Control. What they've achieved is that all subwoofer designers and engineers will now have to play by new rules - KEF's rules.
About Uni-Core technology: this is a specially designed dual driver - two voice coils of different diameters share a common center and use a common space inside the driver. KEF claims that Uni-Core technology reduces cabinet size by more than a third, with the same or greater driver travel than subwoofers that are much larger than the KC62.
It was the traditional Japanese art of origami that led KEF engineers to create the unique folded (corrugated) suspension cone. It effectively handles the sound pressure inside the speaker cabinet without loss of sensitivity.
“P-Flex is a completely new speaker suspension (the manufacturing company has applied for a patent). It resists acoustic pressure inside the cabinet without limiting sensitivity, as traditional semicircular suspensions in conventional speakers do. KEF calls it 'origami' because its appearance is reminiscent of the Japanese art of paper folding. But whatever name you choose, the fact remains that the suspension allows the drivers to move with greater amplitude, resulting in deeper bass and more accurate reproduction with significantly reduced distortion.
Finally, Smart Distortion Control technology reduces non-linear distortion. The principle used is similar to an electromechanical feedback system. But unlike EMOS, no special sensors are used - instead, the current in the voice coil is measured, allowing for instant compensation of detected nonlinear distortion.
“Essentially, the circuit continuously monitors the current in the voice coil, detecting and then correcting any non-linear distortion. The SDCT works in conjunction with KEF's iBX (Intelligent Bass Extension) DSP and SmartLimiter algorithms to ensure that the two 500W Class D amplifiers that power the drivers deliver a perfect signal.”
The KC62 subwoofer is versatile and equally effective when listening to music, watching movies or playing video games. The new KC62 1000 watt subwoofer exceeds traditional expectations of what a subwoofer can achieve based on its size.
The in-line high frequency output means it can be used with external active speakers such as the popular KEF LS50 shelf monitors or the wireless KEF LSX.It may well be that with the advent of KEF's Uni-Core technology, the rule of thumb of 'If you want deep, juicy bass, buy a big sub' is no longer valid and the era of bulky subwoofers is coming to an end
