This polyhedral contact line diamond profile was chosen because it has a very low tip mass and large contact area, while being very narrow from front to back, allowing undistorted recovery of the ultrasonic frequencies in the recording. The large contact area means less wear and tear on the stylus and record, and because it plays lower in the groove than spherical types, old records may very well get a new lease of life.
